Buying Guide: RadioMaster Zorro Radio Controller

A Gamepad-Style Radio for Pilots Who Want More Control Without a Full-Size Transmitter

A radio controller is the part of an FPV setup you use on every flight. The right choice is not simply about protocol support—it is about how naturally the gimbals fit your hands, how easily you can reach switches, how many models you need to bind, and whether the radio is comfortable enough for long simulator or field sessions.

The RadioMaster Zorro Radio Controller is a compact gamepad-style transmitter designed for pilots who want a more ergonomic, feature-rich alternative to entry-level box radios without moving to a large full-size transmitter.

Depending on the version selected, the Zorro is available with 4-in-1 multi-protocol, CC2500 multi-protocol, or ExpressLRS (ELRS) internal RF options. It combines adjustable Hall-effect gimbals, EdgeTX compatibility, a Nano external module bay, USB-C charging, USB simulator support, and up to 16 channels in a compact controller format.

Recommended RadioMaster Zorro Setup

1. Choose the Correct Internal RF Version First

The most important buying decision is not the case color—it is the radio protocol.

Choose the RadioMaster Zorro ELRS Version if your quads use ExpressLRS receivers, such as the RadioMaster RP1 ExpressLRS 2.4GHz Nano Receiver or RadioMaster RP2 ExpressLRS 2.4GHz Nano Receiver.

Choose the RadioMaster Zorro 4-in-1 Version if you need broad compatibility with several legacy or non-ELRS receiver protocols. This version is useful for pilots with a mixed fleet of older bind-and-fly models, toy-grade-compatible protocols, or multiple receiver ecosystems.

Choose the CC2500 Version only when your receiver fleet specifically requires CC2500-based protocols. Confirm protocol compatibility before ordering; “multi-protocol” does not mean every receiver protocol is supported by every radio version.

2. Batteries: Use Two Quality 18350 Cells

The Zorro requires two 18350 batteries, which are sold separately. Pair it with the RadioMaster 18350 900mAh Battery or equivalent matched, rechargeable 18350 cells.

Use a matched pair with the same capacity, age, and charge condition. This helps maintain more consistent runtime and avoids uneven battery behavior.

3. Simulator Training: Connect Through USB-C

The Zorro can work as a USB controller for FPV simulators. Pair it with a quality USB-C data cable and use it with simulators such as Liftoff, VelociDrone, or Tryp FPV before taking a new quad outdoors.

For new pilots, simulator practice is one of the most valuable reasons to choose a full EdgeTX radio rather than a basic toy transmitter.

4. Long-Range or Specialized Protocols: Add a Nano Module

The Zorro includes a Nano-size external module bay. Pilots who need an additional RF ecosystem can pair it with a RadioMaster Ranger Nano ELRS Module, TBS Nano Crossfire Module, or TBS Nano Tracer Module, depending on the receiver system they intend to use.

This means a 4-in-1 Zorro can later be expanded with an external ELRS module instead of replacing the entire radio.

When Should You Choose the RadioMaster Pocket Instead?

The RadioMaster Pocket Radio Controller is the smaller and lighter alternative. It is available in ELRS or CC2500 versions, includes EdgeTX, Hall-effect gimbals, a foldable antenna, removable stick ends, USB-C charging, and uses two larger 18650 batteries.

At approximately 288g, the Pocket is lighter than the Zorro and its 18650 battery format generally gives it a practical advantage for longer sessions. An independent review also highlighted its strong value, compact transport-friendly design, and battery endurance.

Choose the Pocket if compact size, lower weight, and longer runtime matter more than the Zorro’s gamepad-focused ergonomics, larger physical format, and 4-in-1 internal RF option.
