MT12 Buying Guide: Which Setup Is Right for You?

Choosing the right MT12 comes down to three things: your RC model, your receiver, and how far you need to drive or control it.

1. ELRS or 4-in-1?

Choose MT12 ELRS if:

-You want long-range control

-You are building a new RC setup

-You want an ELRS-based setup

-You drive in large outdoor areas

Choose MT12 4-in-1 if:

-You already have RC models with compatible receivers

-You want to reuse the receivers already installed in your vehicles

-You don't want to replace your existing receivers

-You need broader protocol compatibility

For a new setup, MT12 ELRS is the better choice if long-range performance is a priority. The 4-in-1 version is more convenient when you want to work with receivers already installed in your existing RC vehicles.

Quick Pick:

New setup + long range → MT12 ELRS

Existing models + reuse receivers → MT12 4-in-1

2. Already Own an RC Car or Boat? Check Your Receiver First

Before buying, check the receiver currently installed in your vehicle.

Keeping your existing receiver?

→ Choose the MT12 version that supports its protocol.

Building a new receiver setup?

→ MT12 ELRS + an ELRS receiver is a straightforward combination.

The MT12 ELRS can be paired with an ELRS receiver installed in an RC vehicle. In the tested setup, an ELRS receiver was installed in a Traxxas TRX-4 and bound to the MT12 before driving.

Important: The transmitter and receiver must use a compatible protocol.

3. How Much Range Do You Need?

Think about where you normally drive before choosing your setup.

Small indoor areas / short-range driving→ Standard RC radio range may be enough.

Large parks / outdoor driving

→ Consider MT12 ELRS for its long-range capability.

Speed runs or off-road driving

→ ELRS is especially useful when the vehicle can quickly move beyond the range of a conventional transmitter.

In a real-world test, the MT12 ELRS maintained control while an RC car was driven around a park with hills, trees, and other obstacles. The reviewer reported significantly more range than conventional Traxxas and Arrma transmitters used for comparison.

Planning long-distance RC driving? Choose ELRS and pair it with a compatible ELRS receiver.

4. How Many Channels Do You Need?

The MT12 provides 16 channels for controlling different functions on your RC model. The 4-in-1 version can be configured for up to 32 channels when an additional 4-in-1 external module is added.

-Basic RC car: Steering + throttle

-RC truck: Steering + throttle + auxiliary functions

-Crawler: Steering + throttle + lights / winch / other functions

-Advanced RC setup: Multiple switches, knobs, and auxiliary channels

-Expanded 4-in-1 setup: Up to 32 channels with the required external module

The MT12 also includes multiple switches, potentiometers, trim controls, and configurable inputs, giving you room to add functions beyond basic steering and throttle.

5. Do You Need Extra Controls?

The standard MT12 already provides multiple controls for advanced RC models.

You can also expand the transmitter with additional switches, buttons, or a joystick depending on your setup. The transmitter includes an expansion bay designed for additional controls.

Keep the standard setup if:

You only need steering, throttle, and a few auxiliary functions.

Consider additional controls if:

You use lights, winches, handbrakes, multiple auxiliary functions, or a more complex RC model.

6. Don't Forget the Batteries

The MT12 requires batteries, but batteries are not included.

You can use:

-2 × 18650 batteries

-2S power supply / battery pack

The included USB-C cable can also be used for data transfer, firmware updates, simulator use, and powering the transmitter.

Before ordering: Make sure you have a compatible battery solution ready for your MT12.
