HGLRC SPECTER 90A ESC Buying Guide
Choosing the right ESC is not just about picking the highest current rating. Before buying the HGLRC SPECTER 90A, check your battery voltage, motor current, flight controller, and wiring setup to make sure the ESC fits your build.
1. Check Your Battery Voltage
The SPECTER 90A supports 2S to 8S LiPo/Li-ion batteries, making it suitable for a wide range of high-power FPV builds.
2–4S: Suitable for lower-voltage high-power setups
5–6S: A common choice for performance FPV builds
7–8S: Better suited to specialized high-voltage builds
Always make sure your motor and other electronics are rated for the same battery voltage before installation.
2. Make Sure Your Motor Current Is Within the ESC Rating
The SPECTER 90A is designed for high-current applications, with 90A continuous current and up to 100A peak current. When choosing an ESC, don't match the ESC only to the motor's KV. Check the motor's maximum current draw with your chosen propeller and battery.
Simple rule:
Choose an ESC whose continuous current rating provides enough headroom above your motor's expected maximum current.
This helps prevent excessive heat and reduces the risk of ESC overload during aggressive throttle use.
3. Choose Single ESC or 4-in-1 ESC
The SPECTER 90A is a single ESC, so one ESC is used for one motor. Choose a Single ESC when:
-You need very high current capacity for individual motors
-Your frame or build requires flexible ESC placement
-You want easier replacement of one ESC after a failure
-You're building a high-power or custom FPV platform
Choose a 4-in-1 ESC when compact wiring and a cleaner stack are more important.
4. Check Flight Controller Compatibility
Before installation, make sure your flight controller supports the ESC signal and telemetry connection you plan to use. The SPECTER 90A supports DShot150, DShot300, DShot600, OneShot, and MultiShot, as well as BLHeli_32 ESC telemetry. For telemetry, connect the ESC telemetry signal to the appropriate UART/RX input on your flight controller and configure it in your flight controller firmware.
5. Do You Need a Distribution Board?
A single ESC controls one motor, so a multi-motor build using several SPECTER 90A ESCs needs a suitable power distribution solution. The optional HGLRC distribution board can simplify wiring when using multiple single ESCs. It supports up to 8 ESCs and provides power distribution plus BEC outputs, making it useful for larger or more complex builds.
-Choose the Single ESC only if you already have a suitable power distribution solution.
-Choose the ESC + Distribution Board setup if you want a more integrated power and wiring solution for a multi-motor build.
6. Check the Installation Space
The SPECTER 90A measures 39 × 19.6 × 8.34 mm and weighs approximately 13.9 g. Make sure your frame has enough room for the ESC, power wires, motor wires, and heat-shrink protection.
The fully enclosed CNC shell helps protect the electronics while providing a structure designed for heat dissipation, but adequate airflow and proper installation are still important for high-current applications.
Quick Buying Checklist
Before ordering the HGLRC SPECTER 90A, make sure:
✓ Your battery is within the 2–8S range
✓ Your motor's expected current stays within the ESC's capability
✓ Your flight controller supports the required ESC signal
✓ You have a suitable power distribution solution for multiple ESCs
✓ Your frame has enough installation space
✓ You need the advantages of a single high-current ESC rather than a 4-in-1 ESC
Best for: High-power FPV builds, custom builds, and applications where high current capacity and individual ESC installation are more important than a compact 4-in-1 layout.
