Is the TBS Lucid 12S 90A ESC Right for Your Build?
The TBS Lucid 12S 90A is not a typical 4-in-1 ESC for a conventional 5-inch FPV build. Its main advantage is the much wider voltage range: it accepts 3–12S LiPo power, making it suitable for high-voltage FPV platforms where a standard 4-in-1 ESC may not be an option.
The Lucid is rated at 70A for 60 seconds, 90A for 40 seconds, and up to 120A peak for 30 seconds. It is therefore better understood as a high-voltage, high-current single ESC for demanding power systems rather than simply a “90A ESC.”
For builders working with 8S, 10S, or 12S systems, the voltage range is the first reason to consider the Lucid. For conventional 4S–6S builds, a lower-voltage ESC may already provide everything you need.

Choose TBS Lucid If You Need 9S–12S Support
The decision is easiest when voltage is the starting point. If your power system is built around 9S, 10S, 11S, or 12S LiPo, the Lucid is the clear choice between these two ESCs because the SPECTER is specified only up to 8S.
The Lucid is also designed around high-voltage power delivery, with an 8-layer high-current-density PCB and integrated TVS surge protection. These features are particularly relevant when the ESC is being used in a high-voltage system where voltage spikes and current handling deserve more attention.
Choose HGLRC SPECTER If Your Build Stops at 8S
If your battery system is 2S–8S and you do not need the Lucid's 12S capability, the SPECTER becomes a more direct alternative. It provides a 90A continuous rating, 100A peak output, BLHeli_32 firmware, and an STM32G071 MCU.
The SPECTER also has a dedicated distribution-board option on the product page. That makes it worth considering when you are specifically planning a single-ESC-per-arm power architecture rather than simply looking for the highest supported battery voltage.
What Type of Build Is the Lucid Best Suited To?
The Lucid's 3–12S range and support for propellers up to 15 inches make it a better match for larger, high-voltage airframes than conventional 5-inch FPV builds. The product specification specifically notes that propellers over 7 inches require good airflow.
