T-HOBBY AM480 Review: A Lightweight Motor Built for 48–52" 3D Airplanes

If you are building a 48–52" 3D airplane, the motor is not simply about maximum wattage. What matters more is how quickly the motor builds torque, how much thrust it can produce at low speed, and whether the motor adds unnecessary weight to the airframe.

The T-HOBBY AM480 is designed around exactly that requirement.

Its large-diameter, short-height motor structure uses a roughly 3:1 diameter-to-height ratio, giving the motor a torque-focused character rather than simply chasing high RPM. The hollow shaft and ribbed motor bell also help keep the motor around 145g while improving cooling and structural strength.

The T-HOBBY AM480 is designed primarily for 48–52" outdoor 3D and aerobatic RC airplanes.

It is a good match for aircraft where low-speed control, rapid throttle response and strong vertical performance are more important than pure top speed.

The AM480 is available in 600KV, 650KV and 900KV versions. The right KV depends on the aircraft weight, battery voltage and the type of 3D flying you want to prioritize.

For most 48–52" 3D builds, the 650KV version is the most versatile starting point when using a 5–6S battery. The 900KV version makes more sense for lighter aircraft and lower-voltage 3–4S setups.

Propeller Compatibility

The AM480 supports several propeller sizes depending on the selected KV and battery setup. T-MOTOR lists 12×6, 13×6.5 and 14×7 among the recommended propeller sizes.

The AM480 power combo is supplied with T13×6.5 propellers, making this a useful starting point for a 650KV 5–6S 3D setup.

Always match the propeller to the selected KV, battery voltage and ESC current capability rather than choosing a propeller based on size alone.

Published Bench Test Data

What the Test Data Means

The 650KV version is clearly the more power-focused option in the published tests, producing 4.2 kg of static thrust at 1,133W with a T13×6.5 propeller. This gives a 48–52" 3D aircraft plenty of vertical power for aggressive aerobatic maneuvers.

The 900KV version uses a lower-voltage setup and produces less absolute thrust, but its published full-throttle efficiency is higher at 4.27 g/W. That makes it more suitable for lighter builds where a lower overall power requirement is preferred.

For 3D pilots, the important point is not simply the peak thrust number. The AM480 combines a relatively light motor with a torque-oriented design and strong power output, which helps maintain responsive control during hover, Harrier, Torque Roll and other low-speed maneuvers.

For a straightforward 48–52" 3D build, pair the AM480 with the AM66A ESC and T13×6.5 propeller
